Students, faculty, and guests of all ages gathered in the library to welcome our summer break with a crochet workshop. The event allowed our Roadrunners the opportunity to create a handmade keepsake while highlighting the connection between fiber arts and overall well-being. Throughout the workshop, participants were guided through building single chains and then through the intricate process of crocheting a “Granny Stitch” (Earl, 2025). While they immersed themselves in their projects, participants bonded over coffee and casual chatter. As participants progressed, the workshop progressed into an avenue for building community, strengthening connections, and promoting mental health.

Crochet has been linked to feelings of excitement, patience, focus, gratitude, happiness, and relaxation (Degirmenci, 2018). One study specifically surveyed the perception of academic stress and found that participants who knitted or crocheted more frequently experienced lower stress levels compared to those who engaged in these activities less often (Chettiar, 2023), suggesting that fiber arts can play a role in managing academic stress.

As a health sciences library, we remain committed to promoting activities that encourage self-care, balance, and overall wellness among our community members. By introducing creative workshops, we can empower students with valuable tools to navigate academic challenges while contributing to their success and prosperity.  We invite you to join us in our continued effort by participating in future workshops and making time to create something new.
