Cite in AMA

The pharmacy profession writes and cites using AMA style. We cite to avoid plagiarism, lend our work the authority of experts and researchers in the field, continue the scholarly conversation, and recognize the work of researchers before us.

Examine the examples below and explore the interactive slideshow below to help you navigate the basics behind citing AMA style.

General Formatting Rules

In-Text Citations

  • Cite using superscript Arabic numbers after periods/commas with no space.
  • Number in order of first use in text. That same number is used to list the article, in numerical order, in the References list.
  • Once assigned a number, that citation uses that same number every time it is cited in-text.
  • If using author names in-text, use only the surname with the superscript numeral citation directly after the author name. List no more than two author names in text. If there are more than two authors, write only the first author's surname, then write "et al"
