About EndNote


EndNote is a powerful tool that lets you create citations to insert directly into your Word documents.

How to Install EndNote


EndNote should be already installed on all Roseman issued laptops. Just check your list of programs.

If you are an online student or faculty or if you have EndNote X9 instead of EndNote 21, please contact the Technology Services Help Desk to get it installed.

Style Updates


Citation formats are not static, and sometimes you will have to update them in EndNote. To do this you can go to EndNotes Output Styles page and select the format you want to add to your EndNote Library. Below are two of the most commonly downloaded citation formats.

Click on the "download style" button at the bottom of the style page. If the file does not automatically open, find the download in your downloads folder and double click to open it. It will open a style box in EndNote.

In EndNote, select the "File" menu then "Save As."

Give the style a name such as "AMA 11th" or "APA 7th," and save it in EndNote.

Set-up EndNote for Medical & Health Research


Select your Bibliographic Output Style

You can change the output style in EndNote 21 quickly and easily. Select "Tools" from the top, then "Output Styles". From here you can add a new style, edit an existing style, or select a new output style.

If the style you need does not appear in this list:

From the "Output Styles" menu select "Open Style Manager"

An alphabetic list will open, browse for the style you need.

Click on the checkbox next to the style you want to use and close the Style Manager.

Your chosen style will now appear in the list of output styles in the "Output Styles" menu.

Import the Medical Journals Term List

From the "Library" menu, select "Open Term Lists" > "Journals Term List"

In the box that opens, check that the Journals list is empty. If there are titles in the list, select them all using ctrl+A and click "Delete Term."

If there are no titles in the "Journals Term List" you can then

Click on the "Lists" tab at the top of the box.

Check that "Journals" is selected, then click "Import List."

Select "Medical" then click "Open."

A message saying that 14,000+ terms have been added should appear. Click "Ok" then "Close."

Caring for Your EndNote Library


  • An EndNote library comes in two parts: a .enl file and a folder. Do not separate these parts. Keep them in the same location or the library will break.
  • Store your EndNote library in a stable location. EndNote libraries stored in OneDrive, Dropbox, MS Teams, and other cloud locations become corrupted and will cease to work. An EndNote library stored on even a shared network drive can become corrupted over time. Store your library on your computer hard drive and/or a thumb drive.
  • If you store your pdfs in EndNote, keep separate EndNote libraries for different projects. An EndNote library with many hundreds of pdfs will become slow and crash frequently. You can make as many EndNote libraries as you want. Label each library clearly, and keep them in stable locations relevant to the project.

Importing Results from PubMed


Adding Individual Records

From the article page in PubMed:

1) click on the blue "Cite" button on the right

2) click on "Download .nbib"

3) the file may open in EndNote on its own. If it does not, click on the download and tell it to open with EndNote.

 

Adding Multiple Results

From PubMed, you can send selected results, all results from a page (defaults to 10), or all results from your search.

On a results page:

1) if you want only selected results, click on the check boxes next to the specific article titles (skip this if you want all results)

2) click on "Send to" at the top of the results page

3) click on "Citation Manager"

4) choose which items you want to send to EndNote

5) click "Create file"

6) the file should open in EndNote on its own. If it does not, click on the download and tell it to open with EndNote.
